Our History

The organization was founded 2008 by a student named Krystal, who saw a need for pre-medical students to convene. With a little help from the very small Health Professions office, The Pre-Medical Society was born. The creation of the society placed the concept and ability to develop students here at UTSA for careers in the medical field onto the map. Regular membership attendance was between 5-10 people for that entire year.

Carly Bach succeeded Krystal as president in the fall of 2009, where she made a few changes to better the society. She raised Krystal’s vision from a meeting of students to interactions with physicians. For the first time, physicians, med students and EMTs were invited to come speak at the meetings. Along with that came many other firsts, including a first constitution, first trip to visit a medical school, first fund-raising barbecue, and first fall banquet.

Andrew Lopez was the next president in line and he took off running in the fall of 2010. He further expanded the vision by pulling various resources from outside UTSA to help increase funds, membership, advertising, overall presence, etc. One of his main goals was to establish a ‘professional image’ for the society, which included creating an official letterhead and re-designing the Pre-Med logo. Under his administration, a mass advertising campaign was launched in order to link the Pre-Med Society, the UTSA Health Professions office, and the COS (College of Sciences) advising as an available asset to students interested in medicine, among other things. Under this campaign, consistent membership skyrocketed and jumped to 50-60 people throughout the year (the first 2 general meetings in the fall had record attendance of around 120 people), The Society participated in all on-campus events (i.e. Best Fest, Fiesta, mixers, info meetings, etc) and thus began the initiation of soliciting local businesses for donations and sponsorship. The Pre-Medical Society became recognized as a viable on-campus medical career resource both at UTSA and in the eyes of other Texas medical schools. The campaign was so much of a success that:

• Other on-campus pre-health organizations began emulating the meeting setup, organizational format, volunteering resources, etc
• Baylor School of Medicine personally invited Pre-Med Society for a private tour and forum
• The med-school trip list increased including UT-Houston, UT-Southwest, UTMB, Texas A&M, and UTHSCSA
• Pre-Med scholarships were established; in the form of MCAT prep courses
• More physicians and med students wanted to come speak at our meetings than slots available; some had to be waitlisted or even declined
• Mock medical school interviews were set up to aide the members
• The Journal, Article & Book club (JAB) was created to facilitate discussions about several areas of medicine to better prepare members for med school interviews.

Jeremy Derr was next to administrate the Society, from Fall 2011 to Spring 2012. In continuing with the vision, he created a website to enhance professionalism and from there, the dealings of the organization became paperless. Everything was done via web, volunteer sign-ups, becoming a member and paying dues, communication with sponsors/donors, and even meeting power points were online. Due to consistent barbecues every week, more money was raised and used in providing members with more opportunities and med school visitations at inexpensive rates, better T-shirts, more volunteer activities, and the best end-of-year banquet to date. Also, a very new but thorough system of tracking and motivating members with an incentive dragnet was introduced. It was a matrix analogous to the fraternity system used to distinguish, stimulate and assist members to attain maximum success in the organization and life alike. Membership catapulted and The Society was at an all-time high; surveys were introduced at the end of the year to gauge the satisfaction of members and implement any changes for the upcoming year.

Alvand Sehat led the Pre-Medical Society for the 2012-2013 school year. Alvand and his officers kept the original vision and kept expanding the Society. One of the activities that stood out was their complete volunteer involvement with the Corazon Clinic, which is a homeless clinic that serves the impoverished population of San Antonio. This clinic, and the experience it offered our members, continues to supersede all other volunteer opportunities we could delve ourselves in as undergraduate students.

Justin Lounder succeeded Alvand Sehat as president for the 2013-2014 school year. Aside from the regular activities previously implemented, the Society held a Survival Skills Workshop, which taught members tips, tricks, and techniques that could one day help save a bystander's life. At the same time, they had a separate meeting where students got into groups and answered certain questions that could be asked during their medical interview. This activity was a success, receiving good remarks from members because it allowed them to practice their answers one more time, instead of only doing a mock interview. Also, it's noteworthy that this year the Society reached a peak of 140 attendees during their meetings, with an average of 60-70 members.

Maria L. Villarreal succeeded Justin Lounder, becoming President for the 2014-2015 school year. During this year, the Society planned to implement a Mentor-ship Program to assist students in their academic life by providing mentors and possible study groups with their peers with the hope of improving their experience as a Pre-Med.

Sofian Baig succeeded Maria L. Villarreal as the 2015-2016 President. Sofian dedicated his year of service to the society.

Daniel Cantu succeeded Sofian Baig as President of the Society, for the term of 2016-2017. Daniel pushed the limits of the Society to attain increased membership as well as increased member acceptance into medical school.  Daniel accomplished this increase by ensuring the continuation of all the great programs designed by presidents in the past, including volunteering at "Corazon Clinic" and performing mock interviews, to name a few.

Tehrim Pabani succeeded Daniel Cantu, becoming President for the 2017-2018 school year. Tehrim and her fellow officers looked to completely reform and modernize old methods to keep up to date with the changing times. She pushed for the creation of a new website, new social media platforms, new email updates, and more. She helped establish ties between multiple partner organizations within UTSA, as well as pushed our own student advising to help build individual schedules tailored specifically for our members.

Kiran Sankar succeeded Tehrim Pabani, becoming President for the 2018-2019 school year. Kiran sought to expand the society and provide all pre-med students a place where they can get advice and help on their journey. Our membership numbers doubled during this term and we reached a new record for amount of members attending our meetings. He sought to further modernize and build upon Tehrim's work by expanding our Facebook and Instagram social media sites. Kiran attempted to bring the LEMSA seminar program to UTSA and more opportunities for our society. Kiran's officer team had Nada Alshaer as Vice President, Anastasia Jones as Secretary, Carla Ponce as Treasurer, Andrew Godines as Public Relations Chair, Marla Gutierrez as Historian, Shane Mausolf as Student Advisor,  Miranda Green and Alyssa Ibarra as Volunteer Coordinators, Yuli Almaguer as Fundraising Coordinator, and Michelle Le, David Solis, and Gieselle George as JAB coordinators.

Miranda Green succeeded Kiran Sankar, becoming President for the 2019-2020 school year. She hopes to continue Kiran's work and is driving her officers to work towards expanding the image of the society through YouTube, social media sites, and more interactive tabling events. Miranda plans to engage the society in a new direction, focusing more on prep for the MCAT as well as choosing a variety of different speakers to highlight the many facets of medicine. This year was marked with clinical case studies from med school students and more interactive presentations. The Fundraising coordinator position was also expanded to two seats. The website was given a make-over and many elements were added for the benefit of the organization and a YouTube channel was reimagined with new videos produced and uploaded. The 2019-2020 year saw Miranda Green as President, David Solis as Vice President, Michelle Le as Secretary, Julia Wasicek as Treasurer (Anastasia Jones (interim)), Tuan Pham as Public Relations chair, Andrew Godines as Historian, Edgar Garza as Student Advisor, Katie Quigley and Enrique Iglesias as Volunteer Coordinators, Thomas Hester and Mallika Kodati as Fundraising Coordinators, and Sara Forest, Joseph Nieto, and Julia Mathews (Sebastian Velez (interim)) as JAB coordinators.
